Texans Free Agent Shouldn't Expect to Be Signed Anytime Soon

One specific ex-Houston Texans playmaker shouldn't anticipate receiving a new NFL contract anytime soon this offseason.

The Houston Texans have worked hard this offseason to give themselves the best shot at success during the 2025 NFL season. Head coach DeMeco Ryans' team has already won back-to-back AFC South titles and hopes to extend that trend to three consecutive years following a series of much-needed offseason moves.

The arrival of new players means the Texans have been forced to say goodbye to several familiar faces this spring. While some ex-Houston veterans didn't have any issues finding new homes, that hasn't been the case for everyone, as several of the franchise's free agents remain unsigned, one week away from the 2025 draft.

That includes one former playmaker who likely isn't anywhere close to signing a new contract.

Former Texans WR Robert Woods Shouldn't Expect to Be Signed Soon

Even though teams around the league are always looking to improve their wideout situation, it wouldn't be shocking if veteran receiver Robert Woods didn't receive a call anytime soon.

Woods, 33, is a former 2013 Buffalo Bills second-round pick who's played 181 games between the NFL regular season and playoffs. The ex-USC Trojan has racked up 683 catches for 8,233 receiving yards and 38 touchdowns in the regular season on top of his 42-449-1 postseason stat line.

Having said that, Woods isn't the same player who accomplished most of his career accolades. The Gardena, CA native hasn't performed at an elite level since he tore his ACL back in November 2021, averaging only 37.7 catches, 385.3 receiving yards, and one TD in the last three seasons spent with the Texans and Tennessee Titans.

In fact, his 2024 performance with Houston saw him finish with personal-worst totals regarding receptions (20) and yards (203). That's without mentioning how it was also the first time in his 12-year career that he failed to find the end zone.

With his receiving and touchdown totals declining for four straight years, it's clear that Woods' best days are behind him. Any potentially WR-hungry teams are better off looking for answers through the draft because chances are that a good chunk of this year's playmaking prospects likely have more upside than Woods at this stage of his career.

Unless it's as a training camp invite, Woods will likely continue struggling to find opportunities moving forward. He already won a Super Bowl with the Los Angeles Rams a few seasons ago, meaning it might be time for the ex-Texans WR to contemplate making his NFL retirement.
