The 2025 NFL offseason has forced the Houston Texans to make tough decisions regarding this year's free agent class. Although the Texans managed to re-sign names like pass rushers Mario Edwards and Derek Barnett, familiar faces like safety Eric Murray and long snapper Jon Weeks have been forced to join new teams.
Having said that, several former Texans are still available despite free agency being in the middle of its third week. That means Houston general manager Nick Caserio still has time to re-sign members of last year's roster, including one playmaker the team can't afford to lose.
Texans Must Re-Sign Stefon Diggs as Free Agency Continues
Out of the Texans' remaining free agents, wideout Stefon Diggs is certainly the biggest name of the bunch. The four-time Pro Bowl wide receiver is still looking for an opportunity to prove himself after a torn ACL limited him to just eight appearances with Houston last season.
The Texans sent a second-round pick to the Buffalo Bills last April to acquire Diggs, as well as fifth- and sixth-round selections. The hope was that the former Maryland Terrapin would help take Houston quarterback C.J. Stroud's performance to the next level, especially since the veteran playmaker was coming off four consecutive Pro Bowl campaigns with the Bills.
Even though his season ended in disaster, Diggs showed plenty of chemistry with Stroud before the former's injury. The ex-All-Pro wideout had racked up 496 receiving yards and three touchdown grabs on 47 catches, and was on pace for a seventh 1,000-yard performance in a row. That's without mentioning how he also tallied impressive Pro Football Focus grades when it came to receiving (79.7) and overall offense (79.0).
That performance is good enough that the Texans should want Diggs back. Even though Houston has signed WRs Justin Watson and Braxton Berrios since free agency began, neither pass-catcher brings the upside that Diggs boasts — especially if the team is looking to fill the void left by Tank Dell, who's likely missing the entire 2025 season with a torn ACL.
Additionally, it was only last month when GM Caserio expressed interested in a potential reunion.
"We enjoyed having (Diggs) in the building. So, the door is always open," Caserio told SportsRadio 610 on Feb. 19. "We never rule anything out, so we're going to be open-minded."
Assuming that the Texans are still open to striking a deal, Caserio must act quickly.
Diggs has both met with the New England Patriots and worked out with Las Vegas Raiders QB Geno Smith in recent weeks, meaning there's clearly interest around the league for his services. Convincing him to return to H-Town would reunite him with a quarterback he already has chemistry with while solving Houston's need for another game-changing playmaker.
Diggs potentially re-signing with the Texans would also improve their odds of a third consecutive division title. Until then, though, Houston will continue with the NFL offseason as the +140 AFC South favorites on FanDuel Sportsbook.
