The Houston Texans are one of the most intriguing teams entering the 2025 campaign, having established themselves as the clear best squad in the AFC South while still being a step behind the truly elite teams in the conference.
In order for the Texans to become a legitimate contender, they need to find diamonds in the rough across the board at every position. While certain stars are committed to seeing this thing through, improvements need to be made.
The running back room took a huge step forward in 2024 thanks to the acquisition of Joe Mixon, the depth isn't on par with some of the best teams in the league. However, fourth-round pick Jo'quavious "Woody" Marks turned heads at rookie minicamp and might flip the entire depth chart.
Texans RB Woody Marks Could Flip Houston's Depth Chart Before Season Begins
Obviously, Mixon will remain the starter. He's 28 years old though and the organization has a potential out after this year, clearing the way for the fourth-round rookie to surge. Dameon Pierce has struggled after a strong start, and Marks has an opportunity to truly make a difference in his first year.
He spent four years at Mississippi State before transferring to USC, shining in his lone year as a Trojan. Marks rushed for 1,133 yards at 5.7 yards per carry with nine TDs, showcasing an elite home-run ability to turn any play into a score.
Even though he has burning speed, Marks' size was also on full display during rookie workouts. He checked in at a strong 5-foot-10 and 207 pounds at the combine, which only adds to his résumé as a serious threat to rise up the Texans' depth chart in no time.
Running backs notoriously age rapidly. Mixon has a lot of carries on his body, and it's wise for the Texans to start preparing for the future. Marks appears to be that future, especially if his collegiate production translates quickly.
Houston fans should be excited. This is a player who could elevate the offense and completely change the outlook for a group that significantly struggled in 2024. Nico Collins, Tank Dell, and company create an excellent group for C.J. Stroud, yet Marks might be the piece that's been missing.
Should the revamped offensive line hold up, don't be surprised to see Marks become the featured back by 2026.
