The 2024 NFL season was a successful year for the Houston Texans. Although they didn't bring home a championship banner, the Texans still won their second of back-to-back AFC South titles while also making it to the playoff's Divisional Round, where they lost to the Super Bowl runners-up, the Kansas City Chiefs.

The Texans have since entered the offseason, where they're looking to bolster their roster in any way they can. As with every year, the NFL draft is one avenue general manager Nick Caserio can take to upgrade various positions. Houston currently holds seven 2025 selections, including the No. 25 pick in the first round.

Having said that, the latest Texans scouting rumors suggest that the team is in danger of committing a major draft-related mistake.

Texans Host East Carolina CB Shavon Revel for Scouting Visit on Friday

KPRC 2 Houston's Aaron Wilson has reported that the Texans hosted East Carolina cornerback Shavon Revel for a visit on Friday. The Pirates ballhawk is often one of the first CBs off the board during mock drafts and is currently the No. 6-ranked player at his position, according to ESPN's draft rankings.

On one hand, the Texans' interest in Revel isn't surprising. Even though he's coming off a torn ACL, the ECU defender is "expected to be ready to go by training camp," per Wilson, and has all the tools to be a standout disruptor one day, proven by his 2023 second-team All-ACC campaign that saw him finish with the 10th-best broken-up passes in the nation (13).

On the other hand, as great of a career he might have, drafting Revel — or any cornerback — in Round 1 would be a huge mistake for the Texans.

After all, the team's CB situation isn't exactly in dire need of an upgrade. First-team All-Pro ballhawk Derek Stingley Jr. just signed a $90 million contract extension that will keep him in H-Town through 2029. Jalen Pitre just finished with the 20th-best Pro Football Focus defense grade among cornerbacks last season, while safeties Jimmie Ward and C.J. Gardner-Johnson both have experience playing CB snaps.

Revel might become one of the NFL's top CBs one day, but that doesn't mean the Texans should draft him in the first round. The good news is that Houston does hold the 58th overall selection, meaning they could still have a chance to land the ECU prospect if his injury history causes him to slide to Day 2.

Looking at their defensive back depth, it's clear that Houston must use its upcoming first-round pick in another area. Recent wideout-related injuries combined with Stefon Diggs' departure could have the Texans drafting a receiver in Round 1. It also might be wise to use the selection on an offensive lineman after shipping away Laremy Tunsil and Kenyon Green earlier this month.

Well-rounded rosters win titles, and the last thing the Texans need is to take a step back because they wanted to be too top-heavy at one position. That's why it's in GM Caserio's best interest to see Pick No. 25 on a playmaker or to improve the O-line — especially after they only had the 17th-best PFF offense grade last season.

Despite their confusing scouting plans, the Texans' outlook still looks bright. FanDuel Sportsbook is currently favoring DeMeco Ryans' team to win a third straight AFC South title at +140 odds as the NFL offseason continues.
