The Houston Texans are almost to the 2025 season but they have to get through the grind of OTA practices. The Texans will begin their first round of OTA offseason workouts next week and several veterans and rookies will be making the first steps to claim a job.

But for some players, the competition has already been declared over, and it caused a pair of veterans to be handed their walking papers before Houston hits the field.

Texans Cut Kingsley Jonathan and Jerome Carvin Before OTAs

According to the Houston Chronicle’s Jonathan M. Alexander, the Texans have waived veteran defensive end Kingsley Jonathan and offensive guard Jerome Carvin. The spots will be filled by a pair of new signings, including defensive back Myles Bryant and rookie cornerback Keydrain Calligan.

The Texans’ moves can be explained looking at the depth chart. Carvin entered the league as an undrafted free agent with the Kansas City Chiefs but is still looking to stick on a roster. The Tennessee product was buried on the depth chart entering OTAs as the team acquired Laken Tomlinson in free agency and Ed Ingram in a trade with the Minnesota Vikings.

Jonathan was also cut despite joining the Texans as a free agent in February. He played in 15 games for the Buffalo Bills over the past three seasons but had just six tackles. He also appeared in five games for the Chicago Bears in the 2022 season, making four total tackles. With plenty of depth at edge rusher, the Texans decided to use Jonathan’s spot to update some of the thinner areas.

Bryant is a more established name heading into OTAs, spending his first four seasons with the New England Patriots before joining the Texans last season. The 27-year-old played in 11 games with Houston, collecting 14 total tackles, and will return for a second tour ahead of OTAs.

Calligan is also an undrafted free agent out of Southeast Louisiana, making 39 tackles, two tackles for loss, and grabbing an interception for the Lions last season.
