The Houston Rockets have one of the deepest and most talented teams in the NBA after a slew of savvy offseason moves. They have size, athleticism, and an elite defensive ceiling. One thing they continue to lack, however, is shooting.
Adding Kevin Durant will certainly help on that front, but the Rockets are not a good shooting team, especially for a team with championship aspirations. Shot creation and shot making in the half court was their Achilles heel against the Golden State Warriors in the playoffs last season, and it could still be an issue with the current iteration of the team.
That is why the Rockets should complete their excellent offseason by trading for another high-level offensive guard. Fortunately for them, the Chicago Bulls' Coby White may be available on the trade block.
Rockets Should Try to Trade for Coby White from the Chicago Bulls
White can play on and off the ball thanks to his ability to shoot the ball. The 25-year-old continues to improve every season, becoming an efficient and versatile scorer who averaged over 20 points per game last season on an impressive 60.1% True Shooting. He would be an excellent shot creator and maker next to Kevin Durant and Fred VanVleet, while his defensive deficiencies would not be an issue on this team, which has elite defenders in every position.
The most intriguing part about this fit is that White only makes $12.8 million for the 2025-26 season. This makes him acquirable for a package centered around Reed Sheppard.
The Rockets may have to include another small asset or two in the deal to make it worth Chicago's while. However, considering that White is eligible for an extension, the Bulls may be willing to part ways with him rather than pay him a lucrative, long-term deal when they are not ready to contend any time soon.
Parting ways with Sheppard would certainly hurt after only a season, but the Rockets are ready to win now, and they need players who can contribute right away. White is the perfect fit for a team in need of more backcourt help.
