The Houston Texans are one of several teams across the league that will open training camp next week. The Texans are scheduled to have the rookies and vets come in on July 22, as they prepare to embark on another season.

Houston is looking forward to taking that next step after an interesting offseason that saw many changes on both sides of the ball. With those changes, there will be a few training camp battles worth paying attention to over the next several weeks.

There will be players who will win jobs on the 53-man roster, while others will hope to land on the practice squad or sign elsewhere. On the other end of the spectrum, several former Texans players are still waiting to be signed or get an invitation to training camp.

Ex-Texans Playmaker Phillip Dorsett Still a Free Agent Ahead of Training Camp

One of those former Texans is veteran wide receiver Phillip Dorsett. Houston fans might not remember Dorsett’s time with the club. He was on the team during the 2021 and 2022 seasons, which were the David Culley and Lovie Smith eras.

The veteran wide receiver joined the Texans late in the 2021 season after he spent the first part of the year with the Seattle Seahawks and Jacksonville Jaguars. Dorsett played in three games with the Texans (six receptions for 107 yards) and was signed to a one-year extension for the 2022 campaign.

Dorsett ended the 2021 season on injured reserve with an ankle injury. The next season, he had 20 receptions (40 targets) for 257 yards and a touchdown in 15 games.

He wasn’t one of the Texans’ top receiving options as they had Brandin Cooks, Chris Moore, and Nico Collins, but he still found ways to be involved. Since departing the Texans after the 2022 season, Dorsett has bounced around the league, signing with the Denver Broncos, the Las Vegas Raiders, and the Atlanta Falcons.

The last time the ex-Texans wideout played in a regular-season game was with the Broncos in 2023. Dorsett barely saw the field with the Broncos, as he played 34 offensive snaps.

The Falcons cut the former Houston wide receiver in May after signing him to a reserve/future contract in January. Dorsett hasn’t received any reported interest since being cut, and given the talent sitting in free agency at wide receiver, he might have to wait a while to get signed.

The former Texan isn’t a starter at this stage of his career. However, if a team is looking for a vet to stash on the practice squad during the regular season, Dorsett could be an option.
