The Houston Texans have players reporting for training camp on July 22. That's when things start to get serious ahead of the 2025 season.
The Texans made some changes this offseason, hoping they will lead to better results on the field. There will be plenty of competitions happening in a couple of weeks, and several guys won't be sticking around for the long term.
It's clear that C.J. Stroud is the franchise QB and Davis Mills is the backup. That leaves the QB3 battle up to Kedon Slovis and Graham Mertz. The latter was drafted in the sixth round of the 2025 NFL draft.
Meanwhile, Slovis signed with the Indianapolis Colts as an undrafted free agent in 2024 before getting waived in August. He latched onto the Texans, but it doesn't look like he'll be in H-Town for long.
Kedon Slovis’ Time in Houston Could Be Winding Down
There will be a competition between Slovis and Mertz to be the third QB on the roster, but considering Houston used a draft pick on the latter, it looks like the Florida product has a slight advantage.
Even though Mertz still has areas to grow and is just a rookie, he is someone who caught the eye of the Texans.
As for Slovis, he didn't do much to separate himself during minicamp and OTAs. During a practice in June, ESPN's DJ Bien-Aime posted that Slovis threw two out routes during team drills that almost hit media members. That isn't a good look; showcasing his accuracy is an area that needs work.
The BYU product is only on the books for $840,000, and if the Texans released him, all that money would be freed up.
They aren't tied to him financially, so if his play continues to be subpar on the field, it will be an easy decision for the Texans to move on from the young signal caller. He didn't do enough to stick on the Colts roster, and that could be the case again in Houston.
