The Houston Texans will open training camp in the coming weeks, as they prepare for the upcoming season.

The Texans wrapped up OTAs and mandatory minicamp a couple of weeks ago, which gave head coach DeMeco Ryans and the rest of the coaching staff one more look at the 90-man roster before the pads are put on.

Houston has a couple of interesting position battles that will be worth paying attention to, as the Texans will likely have a few tough cuts. At the same time, numerous former Texans who left in free agency this offseason and signed with new teams will look to win jobs.

Some of these ex-Texans will make the final cut, while others might not be that lucky. Veteran cornerback Kris Boyd is likely in the latter category heading into training camp.

Ex-Texans CB Kris Boyd Not Guaranteed to Make Jets' 53-Man Roster

The 28-year-old cornerback joined the New York Jets on a one-year, $1.6 million contract this offseason. Boyd spent the last two years with the Texans, predominantly as a special-teams player.

The Texans signed the 5-foot-11 defensive back to their practice squad on Oct. 26, 2023, after he was cut earlier in the month by the Arizona Cardinals. Boyd appeared in two games with the Texans during the 2023 season.

The veteran defensive back re-signed with Houston on a one-year deal the following offseason. Boyd appeared in all 17 games last season as a special-teams ace. The 28-year-old defender had eight combined tackles and a fumble recovery.

Boyd’s career in Houston ended on a sour note as he was caught during the AFC divisional round against the Kansas City Chiefs pushing special teams coordinator Frank Ross after he was penalized during the first play of the game.

It wasn’t a great look by the vet, but he now gets a fresh start with the Jets. However, on a one-year pact, Boyd doesn’t have much wiggle room. New York likely doesn’t expect him to do much, if at all, on defense.

But the Jets’ CB room could use another vet after losing D.J. Reed in free agency to the Lions. If push came to shove, it's not impossible to think that the Jets wouldn’t part ways with Boyd, to free up a roster spot at cornerback or elsewhere.
