Currently, I have predicted the Houston Texans to select Greg Little, Amani Oruwariye and Julian Love. Here is why they should select Benny Snell with their third round draft pick.

If the Houston Texans solidify their offensive line and cornerback position with their first three picks in the draft, they should look to add more playmakers for Deshaun Watson and their offense. The offense has had good moments but there is another level it could be taken to.

One small move, that could produce huge results would be to replace Alfred Blue. With D’Onta Foreman out most of last year, Blue was the Texans short yardage back behind Lamar Miller. This is an area of need on any team and Foreman was definitely missed.

Blue was a solid back up, he made some plays in the run game and was a solid pass catcher and pass blocker. He is the definition of an average back up running back and the definition of consistency but the level he operates at is not high enough.

The Houston Texans should be looking to upgrade at that position as insurance for Foreman. Another big reason why they should be looking to draft a running back is that the team was not good in short yardage situations unless Watson was running the ball, something the team should want to limit as he was sacked a league-high 62 times and hit on countless other running plays.

This is all why I predict the Texans will go with the ultra-confident and explosive Benny Snell out of Kentucky. The self-proclaimed “Best running back in the SEC” is a workhorse who averaged 5 yards per carry and recorded 1,449 rush yards with 16 touchdowns in 2018.

Snell is a downhill one-cut running back, who has great balance and power. Snell consistently breaks timid arm tackles and uses his balance and power to gain yards after contact.

Snell is also very good in pass protection with the ability to diagnose the pass rush, find his man, and, usually, make the right type of block. This trait is a plus because Snell is still growing as a pass catcher.

The selection of Snell would allow the Houston Texans to continue their approach of bringing Foreman back slowly with the expectation that he will return to form. Achilles injuries are nothing to mess with and can be detrimental to a player’s career if dealt with poorly.

Furthermore, it could also provide the Texans with a three-headed monster at running back with a Pro Bowler in Miller leading the way with Foreman and fresh legs in Snell to back him up. A trio like this could be very successful sharing a backfield with a young general like Watson.

The Houston Texans will only have a chance of selecting Snell in the third round because of the other talented running back in this year’s draft. So even if he has been selected by their third round pick, they should have some other interesting options to ponder over.

With that being said, Snell and Blue have a similar playing style but Snell would be a welcomed upgrade over Blue as he will provide more burst and breakaway ability. A team can never have a large enough stable of capable running backs and adding Snell would give the Texans just that.
