The Houston Texans have two 2nd round picks in the 2019 NFL Draft. Here is why they should take Julian Love with their second 2nd round pick.

The Houston Texans have issues in their secondary, however, their entire secondary was not horrible. The safety position is set, even though they have two free agents in Tyrann Mathieu and Kareem Jackson, they are set to re-sign one or maybe both players.

Now with Justin Reid and Andre Hal still under contract, the Texans need to focus on the cornerback position both in free agency and throughout the draft.

I have the Texans taking the cornerback Amani Oruwariye out of Penn State with their first second round pick. He is more of a bigger outside cornerback and the Texans need reinforcements on both the outside and in the slot.

Which is why I have the Houston Texans picking Julian Love out of Notre Dame with their second 2nd round pick. Love is a 5’10”, 189 lb cornerback that was a key player for Notre Dame’s defense last year. In 2018 he recorded 63 tackles, one interception, and 16 passes defended.

He just loves getting to the football. He consistently uses his agility, instincts, and refined technique to stay with his receiver and make a play on the ball. He has some ball skills and has recorded 5 interceptions in three years. More importantly, he’s deflected 39 passes in those same three years.

The best part about Love is that was not a one hit wonder in terms of passes defended. Last year, he deflected 16 passes. The year prior, he recorded even with 20 passes defended in 13 games.

Love is not the tallest cornerback but he consistently uses his technique and instincts to make sure he has a chance to consistently make a play on the ball if the quarterback chooses to throw his way.

Love is also an above average tackler, as he has consistent pad leverage and runs through wide receivers to make sure he takes them down. He’s recorded 176 tackles in his college career which is a very high number for a cornerback.

Literally, the only question the Houston Texans may have about Love is his size. Love will be able to mitigate those concerns during the combine. However, he did not let his size hurt him in college so many believe it will not hurt him in the NFL, especially if he plays in the slot.

The Texans still have Aaron Colvin under contract, so they still have a player with experience playing the slot. However, with Colvin and the entire cornerback position struggling (And appearing to have aged) last year, the Texans need all youth and competition at the position that they can get.

Love would be an extremely solid addition to the Houston Texans secondary. There is no doubt that he should be available towards the end of the second round, where the Texans are picking, because of injury but that shouldn’t be a problem come offseason workouts.

What do you think, do you think the Houston Texans should go back to back corners in the second round or should they look to improve the roster at other positions?
