The Houston Rockets don’t need the star power

One of the reasons that Melo didn’t work out in New York is because he’s not really the type of star that can lead a team to the promised land. He doesn’t distribute at an elite rate. He doesn’t rebound at an elite rate. He definitely doesn’t defend at an elite rate.

However, all of that is okay with the Houston Rockets. While the lack of defense definitely stings, it won’t be the end all be all. The Rockets don’t need Melo to be “Hoodie Melo” or superstar Melo in order to remain in the top tier of the Western Conference.

The Rockets need Melo to come in and do what Melo does best. Shoot the heck out the dadgum ball. Melo made a career-high 169 threes on a career-high 474 shots, that’s a 36% clip. This is exactly what the Rockets need after the three ball failed them in game seven of the WCF.

There may absolutely be times when Melo is called up to take over a game on the offensive end and carry the team to victory. But, that won’t be what the Houston Rockets need all of the time. They just need him to be Melo and do his thing with his shot.

There may be some slight bumps in the road as the season progresses but, Melo will surely slide into that role and provide the extra offensive firepower the team needs.
