Dream 2: Tyrann Mathieu spearheads secondary resurgence

The Houston Texans secondary has been pretty good for a long time. Unfortunately, injuries to the pass rush revealed some pretty glaring holes that had developed. Johnathan Joseph is aging and isn’t the lockdown corner he used to be. Kevin Johnson dealt with another inconsistent, dinged up season.

But, the Houston Texans addressed this in the offseason. First, Aaron Colvin was poached from division rival Jacksonville. Colvin played a lot of slot for the Jaguars but, their cornerbacks were stacked. He should be able to play on the outside for the Texans. The team also won the Tyrann Mathieu sweepstakes. He’ll be planted in the safety position.

This unit’s potential is off the charts. Mathieu manning the middle of the field automatically makes this unit better. Colvin can turn into the number one corner the team needs. If Justin Reid adapts quickly and Johnson plays consistently this unit will take off.

Nightmare 2: The secondary remains as porous as swiss cheese

A lot of things would have to go wrong for this to happen. Mathieu’s injury bug would have to return. Colvin will have to flop on the outside. Just a million things will have to happen as the personnel the team has this year is better than it has been.

If for some reason the pass rush tails off again, that could potentially expose this unit if it doesn’t pan out. This may be one of the more far-fetched nightmares but, on the off chance it does happen the wheel for the team could fall off quickly.
