Reason #2: The Solution

We all knew in our hearts that a closer was needed and with Zach Britton off the board, there were only two available candidates — either Raisel Iglesias or Roberto Osuna with the latter likely being the better fit for the team.

Earlier today, Luhnow and the Houston Astros organization chose Osuna and he specifically requested to speak with him personally before pulling the trigger.  He said that the conversation was “enlightening” but wouldn’t discuss further details.

Why did he specifically request to speak to Osuna?  Well unless you’ve been under a rock as of late, Osuna is currently serving a 75-game suspension for violating MLB’s domestic violence policy.

This stems back to an arrest made on Osuna in early May after being alleged of assault in Toronto.  Osuna was released on bail and was put on administrative leave before the commissioner threw down the hammer of that said 75-game suspension to which he is currently serving.

Osuna continues to proclaim his innocence and he still has a legal battle to fight — let alone a personal battle to save his reputation —  in court.  He did meet with the Crown attorney — the Canadian equivalent to the district attorney here in the States — July 9 but not much progress to a resolution came about the meeting.

His next court date will be Wednesday, Aug. 1 at 2 p.m. EDT in Toronto as well to try to come to resolution to the assault charges that have been brought against him.  Osuna has not been in contact with the alleged victim and is currently in nearby Buffalo with the Triple-A Bisons, having been working on his rehab assignment since July 14 with three previous appearances with the GCL Blue Jays and the Class-A Advanced Dunedin Blue Jays.  He threw three scoreless innings during that stretch as well.
