The Houston Texans have acquired a new quarterback!  This time, he is in the style of Deshaun Watson: a dual threat quarterback.

The Houston Texans recently acquired journeyman quarterback Brandon Weeden. Many have questioned the signing of Weeden, even though he knows the system. Weeden is not the same style of quarterback as Watson, which would mean the offense would have to change if Weeden had to come in.

However, all of this could change with the signing of dual threat quarterback Joe Webb. Webb brings a fourth QB into the mix including Watson, Weeden, and Taylor Heinicke. The Texans will be Webb’s fourth team going into his eighth year. He spent the first four years of his career in Minnesota. The following three were spent in Carolina, Webb then followed former Panther coach Sean McDermott and GM Brandon Beane to Buffalo.

Webb only played 39 offensive snaps for Buffalo in 2017. Dating back to his Minnesota days, Webb proved to be fairly competent at QB. He threw for 853 yards and three touchdowns over two years there.

What can the Houston Texans expect from Joe Webb?

More from House of Houston

Unfortunately, Webb probably will not have a tremendous impact on the back up quarterback competition. Webb is a phenomenal athlete. No one can question that fact. He played 278 special teams snaps last year alone.

Webb can contribute immediately on the Texans special teams units. He’ll be a weapon for new special teams coordinator Brad Seely. Webb can line up anywhere on special teams from gunner to returner.

However, due to his athletic ability and history as a quarterback, I expect the team to let him compete and try to earn the back up job. If Webb can prove capable as a back up QB, it would allow the team not have to completely change the offense. Of course, the hope is that the Texans will only have to use the back up in a blow out game up 30 points.

Regardless, Webb’s best path to making this team and contributing will be special teams. There is no shot he battles Watson for QB snaps, but the rest of quarterbacks on the roster leave a lot to be desired. Webb will probably get a shot at the back up spot, but I still do not believe our back up QB is on the roster.

GO TEXANS!
