Jose Altuve just agreed to a five-year, $151 million extension, the Houston Astros’ richest contract in history.  Here are some of my quick thoughts on the whole situation.  Take a look.

One of the cornerstones of the Houston Astros rebuilding process and World Series championship team, second baseman Jose Altuve signed a 5 year contract extension with the team.

Houston Astros beat writer Brian McTaggart broke the news with this tweet:

The $151 million extension is the biggest in club history, which would begin in 2020, the end of Altuve’s current contract.

Altuve had his best season in 2017, hitting a MLB best .346, 24 home runs, 32 stolen bases

which was good enough for him to earn the American League MVP. Even more impressive is that he became the first player ever to lead the American League in hits (204 of those in 2017) for four consecutive seasons.

Longtime Major League Baseball writer and former Houston Chronicle writer Richard Justice wrote a great piece about what the contract extension not only means for the Houston Astros, but for the fans as well.

Detroit Tigers designated hitter Victor Martinez who was mentioned in Justice’s article said it best:

"“I hope teams learn a lesson about evaluating players, It’s not how tall you are. It’s your talent. It’s your heart.”"

Jose Altuve is a Houston fan favorite for a reason. He is small but mighty. It seems that every time he comes up to the plate, there isn’t a pitch he cannot hit.  His speed while fielding and while running the base paths, is out of this world good and so fun to watch.

Watching Altuve and Carlos Correa turn double plays is truly a treat to watch. His tenacious work ethic to get better every day even when he is already so good is inspiring. His joy for the game is child-like and reminds us all what sports are really about, having fun with a passion that one holds so near and dear.

Houston Astros fans do not need to worry about Altuve’s whereabouts for quite some time. His stakes are firmly planted in the ground here in Houston. More importantly, his heart is here to stay. He loves this city and this team.
