Houston Texans: Why Deshaun Watson is a franchise quarterback
There are two ways of looking at the Houston Texans’ loss to the New England Patriots with Deshaun Watson in tow.
For the Houston Texans, the number one reason is that Tom Brady was Tom Brady again. In addition, number two is that Houston does have a franchise quarterback who played his butt off to win the game in a hostile environment.
So we knew that going into week three that the Houston Texans would probably lose the game to New England. The question going into the game was would Deshaun Watson thrive in the spotlight as a franchise quarterback. John McClain said that Watson can handle the spotlight. He played in two national championship games against Alabama while at Clemson. Alabama’s the king of college football right now just as the Patriots are the kings of the NFL.
But one thing McClain did say was that he expected the Houston Texans to lose. I agreed with him there. The only thing I hoped was that the Houston Texans played tight football with New England to respectability. This would tell us how close we were to knocking off the Patriots in the future.
We played New England six times and came up empty-handed. All games were blowout losses. But the previous two meetings showed how close we’re getting. We played a great first half against them last season in the playoffs. But the Patriots ran off in the second half. Yesterday, we played great football against the Patriots and almost won.
What Does It Tell Me?
That tells me we are so close to beating the Patriots. It sounds crazy because we got fans saying we should’ve won the game, which I agree with. We got fans saying we should’ve gone for it on fourth down, which I agree. Houston has fans saying the Texans defense blew it, which I disagree.

I knew that there was a chance that Tom Brady would find a way to win that game because it’s Tom Brady. Even with the near interception on our part or the 3rd and 18 situation, I felt that Brady was going to win. If the Texans defense blew it, then say that to all the other defenses that couldn’t stop Brady.
Brady showed once again why he’s the best ever.
Brady won the game, but the real winner was Watson. Here’s a rookie quarterback who had 301 passing yards against the defending Super Bowl champions and he was electric. He had two touchdown passes and dazzled us with his video game-like moves.
He exceeded all expectations even if a timeout wasn’t called earlier. He still had the guts to throw the hail mary knowing that there was a small chance that the Texans would get it. I thought we had it there but we didn’t.
Comparison Time
Tom Brady knows a thing or two about seeing potential teams beating the Patriots now. As a matter of fact, he was on Watson’s side back in 2001. The Patriots took on the St. Louis Rams in the regular season. This was when the Rams had the “Greatest Show on Turf” with Kurt Warner, Marshall Faulk, and Isaac Bruce. Brady had just taken over for Drew Bledsoe at quarterback. The Patriots hung tough with the Rams, but fell 24-17.
What happened in their next meeting?
The birth of a franchise quarterback and a dynasty.
Final Thoughts
I’m not saying the Texans will be a dynasty. They have the potential to be soon. First they have to answer critics, which we know they have the capability to do. But most America’s Game documentary features a Super Bowl winning team that has troubles with one other NFL franchise until they finally beat them to reach the Super Bowl.
Next: THREE reasons why J.J. Watt is Person of the Year
Hey! It could happen to us. We could meet up in the AFC Championship game later on and beat them. We know we can beat them. Our team has a franchise quarterback now. He had his best game to date and we should have more games from him later on. But after three seasons in which quarterback play was off the charts literally, we have a team to get far. It might not happen this year, but it should be in the next couple of years.
Okay! So we’re 1-2 now. But between you and I, I don’t think this is a 1-2 we should be panicking over. This is a 1-2 we should be excited for in the years to come.
