Houston Texans: Three reasons why J.J. Watt is Person of the Year
The Response
What Watt has done for the city in the recent years has shown truly how much he cares about the city. Most athletes would make a donation or tweet out thoughts and prayers to the victims of the storm. Watt did just that and then some.
Look at the response from people. He’s being featured on talk shows like Good Morning America, CBS, and CNN for his efforts. You got teams like the Dallas Cowboys, who I tip my hat and say they deserve our respect for contributing to the funds even if there’s a friendly rivalry. You even have celebrities like Drake, Kevin Hart, Miley Cyrus, Jimmy Fallon, Leonardo DiCaprio and Ellen Degeneres contributing.
But what makes all of this special is for two things. Number one is how many people are contributing. Rather than five people teaming up for the total amount, it’s been countless people ranging from $5 to $1 million.
These donations are showing that everyone does care for Houston even if at times, we might feel unimportant to the world. Watt has become the voice of reason for us so much that there’s even a petition to name a highway after him. I’ve already signed it myself.
Let’s be clear here! Athletes are not easily the most widely recognized figures in the world. You have many people who don’t watch sports and still know who some athletes are. But Watt’s contributions and dedication to the people of Houston have already garnered him the same respected status around the world as a president, celebrity, elite sports athlete, and national hero in other categories.
No matter what Watt achieves in his football life, which we hope Lombardi comes to Houston soon, as Scott Van Pelt puts in, the first paragraph of his obituary will talk about the contributions to Houston during the aftermath of Harvey.
Next: A prediction of the 53-Man Houston Texans Roster
So to anybody who dares try and win the Walter Payton Man of the Year award, you’re just as deserving if you’re a finalist. But I think the contest is over and #99 is going to be honored with more than just sports accolades.
That is the end of A Football Life on the Houston Texans J.J. Watt.
