The scheduled game tomorrow night between the Houston Texans and Dallas Cowboys has been cancelled in light of the tragic events surrounding Hurricane Harvey.

The Houston Texans, who have been in Dallas since early Sunday after playing their third preseason game against the New Orleans Saints, will scrap the game and reportedly head back home here to Houston.

Mark Berman reports on the Houston Texans announced change of travel plans:

The team apparently has found a safe route to get back to H and I’m sure Interstate 45 will  play a huge role in that.  Most of the interstate is now passable southbound into the city — with the exception of near downtown — but by then, they’ll have a ton of options to navigate through our complex but strained highway system.

The Texans also announced that the McNair family will donate the equivalent of what the ticket sales would’ve been — there were reports of ticket sales exceeding 40K — which would be about a $1 million to donate to the Harvey relief efforts.  Fans who had purchased tickets will be offered the option to either donate their money to the Harvey relief fund or to request a refund for the amount that they paid via Ticketmaster.

As I’ve stated before, this game should’ve never happened to begin with.  Even though football trumps just about everything, sometimes there are more important things than that.  This tragedy that has befell South Texas is an extreme downer and knowing that our guys are coming home will be a huge boost for our morale as sports fans.

This could be categorized as the worst rain event in history and we all as Houstonians have a story to tell as far as what we went through during this storm.  I remained safe and on high ground throughout the duration of the storm and I’m thankful to my heavenly Father to no end for this.

But anyway, the Texans will get to get back to their families, some of which who had to evacuate and are currently taking shelter-in-place.  I’m sure Bill O’Brien would like see his family, Tom Savage would love to see his wife and daughter and Jon Weeks – a father of three — would prefer to be back as well.  In general, this team wants to get back to their loved ones and I could only imagine how they feel.  It’s just terrific to know what type of smiles they’ll have on their faces when they finally get to reunite.

And that moment alone will have the brilliance of more than anything that a meaningless preseason game would provide.

Go Texans.
