4.  Houston will move into the Top 10 as far as defensive rating

Houston posted the 18th best — or 12th worst — defensive rating in the NBA last year. The Golden State Warriors and the San Antonio Spurs, the team that won the title and dispelled the Rockets respectively, posted the 2nd and 1st best ratings respectively.

Quite simply, Houston’s not good enough defensively to win a title if they replicate last year’s efforts. The additions of Chris Paul, Luc Mbah A Moute and PJ Tucker will shore up Houston’s defense, however.

Combined, A Moute, Tucker, and Paul form a trio of defensive stoppers capable of plugging every position on the court. Houston’s focus on pace and offense in 2017 often meant dedicating effort to one side of the ball. Morey’s activity this offseason in signing defensive stoppers and acquiring Paul will help free up energy for two way play this year.

Look for Houston to jump up into the top 10. If I’m being extra bold (I expect a royalty check, Doritos), I expect the Rockets to move into the top three. That means Houston will give up five fewer points per game. Given that Chris Paul is accustomed to slower paced basketball and the likely staggering of his minutes with Harden – combined with our off season additions – I fully expect Houston to make a major leap in defensive rating.
