With their loss to the Oakland Athletics Sunday, the Houston Astros currently have a record of 76-48.

With only 38 games to go and the American League West seeming to be in complete control of the Houston Astros, there is only one question that remains, can Houston reach 100 wins?

Before the All-Star break this seemed like a forgone conclusion that the team would reach 100. However, with the team’s play lately, this has become an uncertainty for the ball club.

Looking Ahead

To reach 100 the team would need to win 24 of their last 38 games. Most of their remaining games are against their sub-.500 AL West opponents.

This bodes well for the Astros, with most of these teams already out of playoff contention they will most likely end up playing some of their younger players for evaluation purposes as they look forward to 2018.

Historical Implications

The team has only won 100 games once before, their 1998 team, that went 102-60. The team came close in 1999 and 1986, winning 97 and 96 games respectively.

This would also be their best season since moving to the American League. In a season in which the team has broken so many records and has played so well, it seems like they’re destined to be one of the most remembered teams in Astros history.

Can They Do It?

I believe that it will come down to the final seven games of the season, three games against the Rangers and four games against the Boston Red Sox.

The Texas Rangers will most likely be out of playoff contention by the time late September comes around and will be looking to play spoiler.

The Boston Red Sox might be in contention for the number one seed with the Astros in the American League playoff race, they would love nothing more than to win the league title in front of their home crowd.

I believe the Astros will exceed 100 wins, they will end up at 101-61. They will will be the American League’s number one seed and will right the ship once guys like Will Harris, Lance McCullers and Carlos Correa come back from the disabled list.
