Houston Astros: The incredible Marwin Gonzalez is the Team MVP
By Dan Shedd
At 71-40, The Houston Astros have a lot of players that are worthy of team MVP.
Houston Astros roster favorites such as Jose Altuve, George Springer, Josh Reddick, and Carlos Correa before his injury are the most notable ones that I can think of.
But lest we not forget, one man stands out and that’s the versatile Marwin Gonzalez.
Gonzalez has been great this year at the plate, hitting .313, mashing 20 home runs and 66 RBI’s. Whether it’s stepping in for an injured starter (i.e. Correa) or batting DH, he’s truly a utility guy in every sense of the word.
Another amazing thing about Gonzalez is that he’s actually doing better than some of the Houston Astros All Stars in some categories like OPS. Michael Clair of MLB.com has some pretty good proof in this recent article. There is no messing around with Marwin Gonzalez at the dish.
He’s also known to play hero ball for the Astros when it looks bleak for a victory. And he’s done this multiple times throughout his career. Remember that game winner in 2015?

If you don’t, go visit YouTube and search for Marwin Gonzalez. It’ll be worth it. He also hit a big home run in Baltimore earlier this year.
He’s also been outstanding in the field, wherever manager A.J. Hinch needs him to be. He’s natural left fielder, but he can the hot corner (third base) with relative ease when Alex Bregman needs a break, he can also play shortstop and turn two (double play) with the best of them.
Marwin has been one of the biggest reasons why the Astros have been so successful this year. He’s added plenty of depth at just about every position. If he could take the mound and throw some flames, we could use the help this year. Maybe Tyler White can share some of his pitching secrets. That would be icing on the cake for a pitching staff that could use some serious help right now.

It’s incredible how Marwin has developed over the years, from spot-starter to everyday player because of our needs. His value has soared tremendously and I do believe that the best is yet to come.
