The Houston Astros made a miraculous come back against the Toronto Blue Jays this Sunday. At the center of the comeback was Alex Bregman with a two out, two RBI triple and then scoring the winning run to complete the four run rally.

The Houston Astros lost their all-star shortstop in Carlos Correa on July 18th. While the Astros had a comfortable enough lead in the entire American League that it was not fully a cause for concern, it certainly was a blow to the league leading offense.

But perhaps there’s a silver lining here. And that is that Alex Bregman has picked up his share of the offensive load in Carlos Correa’s absence. Whether there’s a correlation there or it’s just purely coincidence that Bregman is finally performing like we all know he’s capable of, since Correa’s loss Bregman has been spectacular.

At the all-star break, Bregman was having a decent season, but certainly nothing special. Much like Jason Heyward last year for the Chicago Cubs, it’s easy to overlook a disappointing aspect of the team when everything else is going so right. To be clear, Bregman’s season wasn’t going nearly as badly as Heyward’s did last year offensively.

But still, it was disappointing to see he was hitting .256 with only 30 extra base hits.  However since the all-star break, and specifically the loss of Carlos Correa, Bregman has turned it on.

Since Correa’s injury on July 18th, Bregman has raised his batting average to .273, going 20/57 for a .351 batting average. What’s more impressive is the way he’s slugging the ball though. Of those 20 hits since Correa went down, 13 have been for extra bases (six doubles, two triples, and five home runs.) He’s also only struck out four times since July 18th. Repeat. He’s struck out four times in three weeks.

Whether there is a mental tie to this or not doesn’t really matter. If Bregman has finally found his stroke then watch out for when George Springer and Carlos Correa return.

Next: Team still interested in Justin Verlander

The offense already was lethal enough without Bregman playing up to what he’s capable of. Now that he is lacing the ball around the field, hopefully he can stay healthy and consistent heading into October, because this offense will need to carry the team if we’re going to get a World Series pennant. And Bregman will be no small part of that. Geaux Bregman!
