The Houston Texans have a situation on their hands and for the first time in awhile, their public relations department’s wits will be tested.

The news stems from a report from the Houston Chronicle’s Aaron Wilson in regard to third-year reserve wide receiver/punt returner Keith Mumphery.  According to the report, this stems from an alleged rape accusation back in March 2015 on Michigan State’s campus.  Since being drafted by the Houston Texans, Mumphery had been working on graduate studies but can no longer do so as a result of the information obtained by school officials.

Wilson says Mumphery was never charged of a crime as there as the county prosecutor did not feel that the case could be proven beyond a reasonable doubt plus not being able to get a hold of the accuser.  The campus police had recommended that he be arrested for third-degree sexual misconduct but he ultimately wasn’t because of the aforementioned data.

The two allegedly engaged on Tinder, a popular dating app and what happened and who did what to whom in the accuser’s dorm room two springs ago has conflicting stories.  Mumphery continues to ascertain his innocence and that he was seduced.

There’s no word yet on if he’ll appeal the decision that was made by MSU’s brass — the ban lasts until Dec. 31, 2018 — Kennard McGuire — his agent — and the Houston Texans did not comment on the incident.  The Houston Texans have said that they’re gathering information about the incident and Mumphery still remains an active member of the roster but wasn’t at practice yesterday.

This news was part of a larger report from Chris Solari of the Detroit Free Press who seized this classified information via the Freedom of Information Act.  Three MSU football players were suspended in January 2016 because of alleged sexual assault and that case is pending with school officials.

This news is so concerning to hear as Mumphery’s reputation as a clean-cut scholar and a hard-worker have been put on the line.  Eventually, the truth will come out about this and we’ll all find out more about what actually happened that night.

Because this alleged event occurred two months before the draft, it’s quite possible the Texans knew about this before drafting him but there’s certainly no evidence of that.

We’ll have to see.

Mumphery, a former 5th-round pick, has caught 24 balls for 198 yards without any touchdowns.  He’s averaged 7.8 yards per punt as of late and did put up 24.1 yards per kickoff when he had that role in 2015.
