Houston Rockets: Go Get Frank Vogel Now!
The Houston Rockets are uncharacteristically in midst of the off season as a result of the once highly-regarded but underachieving season that they’ve just had.
There are going to be tremendous changes on the horizon and I have no idea what this team is going to look like next season.
But I know with certainty that James Harden will be on the roster as he has emerged as the single cornerstone of the franchise as his working relationship with Dwight Howard is beyond irreparable.
Let’s face it folks, he calls the shots and the Rockets will continue to have an open ear as far as his input on how to build the team around him.
It’s totally understandable but I’m a firm believer that you shouldn’t put too much power in a player’s hands because that was part of the problem for this season.
I’ve continued to reiterate that Harden likely had — but I have no proof — that he had a tremendous impact on the firing of Kevin McHale.
The two were bumping heads and I had a strong feeling that his days were numbered.
But would McHale have turned things around eventually after the 4-7 start 11 games into season?
We’ll never know but I suspect that the likely result would’ve been similar to what we had this season.
But I honestly think that although general manager Daryl Morey was likely quick with the trigger finger, he still did McHale a favor.

McHale was able to relax, do some television and radio spots and enjoy the $12 million in cash that he’s still owed.
Managing this team of misguided misfits is not an easy task and I imagine McHale was stressed out to no end with the situation magnified because of the Rockets unimpressive play early-in.
But we’re past that now and it’s time to go out and find a coach that will lead this team back to the upper echelon once again.
The Rockets are going to be cautious with the search but I’m sure a wrinkle has now been thrown in.
What is it you may ask?

Indiana Pacers’ president Larry Bird just announced that Frank Vogel will not be returning as the head coach of a team that has had notable success over his tenure.
I had feeling that he wouldn’t be returning — Bird didn’t seem to be too fond of him and I think he has always wanted to hire his own guy since the sabbatical he took away from the team for some health issues he had to take care of.
So there’s that…
But I think the Rockets seriously need to be on the phones — like right now — to try to see if they can woo him to come down to the Bayou City.
The Rockets’ coaching job still has it’s fair share of challenges but I’d imagine it’s still attractive to top coaching candidates because of talented stars like Harden.
What I like about Vogel is that he coaches DEFENSE and quite well to boot.
This past season, the Pacers remained in the Top 10 in defensive efficiency — finishing 3rd — allowing a stingy 100.2 points per 100 possessions.

For the playoffs, they allowed 99.0 points per 100 possessions.
Just think if he could bring that mindset to the Rockets!
I think he could challenge Harden to greater heights with his defense which would allow the rest of the team to follow suit.
Vogel’s offense is anemic but his teams do score enough points to win games which is all that matters.
The Pacers’ offensive efficiency was ranked 23rd (102.4 points per 100 possessions) and 103.4 for the playoffs.
Ladies and gents, Vogel is a younger-version of Jeff Van Gundy and an excellent coach in his own right.
He just didn’t have the personnel to be successful in Indiana and that’s not necessarily his fault.
I think the Rockets could give him what he needs he to excel as that is in the best interest of the elevation of this franchise.
So get on the phones DM and woo this man on bended knee!
Unlike many marriages that fail, this one WILL work!

And I’m spent.
Vogel went 250-181 over six seasons as the head coach of the Pacers with a 61-31 playoff record.
Go Rockets.
