For our 2nd Texans mock draft (for part one click here) we wanted to do something a little different and more realistic, like include trades.  Very few drafts roll through for one team, particularly the Texans historically with no trades.

Most mock drafts you see will be just one writer or one person’s opinion.  Some will try to add some realism in hoping for a sense of fairness by utilizing a big board from a national publication of some sort, and this does help.

However, the problem with those is they fail to account for other teams needs and who other teams might select.  In other words, they are simply hoping this guy or that will be available in a given slot or range.

For this mock we utilized a pretty nice little tool that is available called Fanspeak.  What Fanspeak does is allow the user to use any number of draft lists from sources such as CBS, NFL.com, Drafttek, Walter Football, Bleacher Report and so on.  They have also programmed in the needs, with some priority for each team.

In essence, you can select a team and run through a full simulation of the draft.  And with the Premium service you even have options of trades that you can initiate or trades randomly offered to you as you go.

Is it perfect?  No, of course not, because nobody knows how each team thinks or will react live.  But it’s the closest we’re going to get prior to the real thing starting on Thursday.

For the purposes of this mock, since all draft lists are different we used the Composite list, a culmination of all 15 lists that Fanspeak has downloaded.
