Houston Rockets: Do We Really Need Patrick Beverley?

None other Chandler Parsons.
Damn it.
Mark Cuban is already out there trying to poach some more of our talent and he’s making no secret about it.
When asked by Jonathan Feigen of the Houston Chronicle about Parsons’ recruiting efforts, this is what Beverley had to say:
"“I hear from Chandler every day,” Beverley said. “It’s hard, but I try not to think about it. I can’t talk about contracts. It’s going to be a fun summer. I have put myself in a position to be set for life and that’s something that I never thought was possible growing up.”"
Interesting sound byte.
That definitely means Cuban is prepared to perhaps overpay just to get Beverley donning a Mavericks uniform.
Now we’re not talking the astronomical max-deal numbers that Parsons was offered in last year’s off season but it will be more money than he had ever envisioned.
Here’s what Beverley added:
"“I am hearing numbers I have never heard in my life,” Beverley said. “It’s a blessing. I have worked my (butt) off to get where I am today."
And it looks like Beverley spent this weekend in Big D considering the intentional exchange of pleasantries on Twitter:
I talked about this earlier in the season.
Beverley is a restricted free agent meaning that the Rockets have the right to match any offer he receives to retain him.

Although Beverley has immense value with the Rockets, Daryl Morey will not think twice about letting him go if the offers he gets are way out what the franchise has budgeted for.
It’s no secret that he wants to return in the Rockets uniform but it has to be at the right price for him.
Bev is looking to be rewarded for the hard work and the rocky road that he traveled to get to the highest level of professional basketball.
I can’t blame him for that.
But just as we persevered without him in the NBA Playoffs, this team can chug-a-lug along without him if we lose him via free agency.
In fact, I ran the NBA’s stat machine to see what lineups were most efficient with Beverley included and although he’s featured on the most effective one (+2.9), there were many lineups that did just as well with Jason Terry as the starter.

There were three lineups compared to Beverley’s one that were just as efficient each garnering numbers somewhere above +2.
So although I’m positive it will be tough to replace the high level of defense Beverley provides night in-and-out, I think the Rockets will be fine if he does go chase those dollars.
He knows that it’s a business just as much as he desires to improve his financial situation.
Beverley would likely never provide the play making capabilities that we currently need at that position to take the load of Harden.

Plus, there were many times where Beverley was playing quite bad even while healthy so I wonder did he already know he was going to be targeted by the Mavs causing him to pump the brakes a bit?
That may be too reactionary but not far-fetched.
All I know that it’s going to be a bumpy ride this off season — fasten your seat belts, ladies and gents!
Go Rockets.
