Series: Houston Astros Top 5 Outfield Prospects
By Ryan Simmons
Hernandez is another one of our Quad Cities River Bandits, and he’s making a splash in the farm system.
Hernandez was picked up out of the Astros Dominican Summer League in 2011 at the age of 18.
Over the course of last season, Hernandez’s numbers increased almost across the board. That, unfortunately includes strikeouts as well. He whiffed 135 times (coincidentally the same number of hits he recorded as well). This number is completely out of the ordinary for him seeing as how throughout the two previous years, he struck out 42, and 66 times respectively.
If Hernandez can pull those strikeouts down to a more manageable level, his line of .271/.328/.435 will improve. He’s a plus fielder and has shown skill in the batter’s box. He’s already getting mentions as a top 15-Astros prospects and certainly deserves the publicity.
Hopefully he can get those strikeout numbers under control. If he does, his numbers will do the rest of the talking.
