5. Danry Vasquez

The Astros acquired Vasquez from the Tigers in exchange for Jose Veras last season.

As a straight up trade, this trade made perfect sense. There was no chance of the Astros going into the playoffs anytime soon when Veras was traded, so we traded a player who could give us minimal help in the short term for one that could give us far more benefit in the long term.

Baseball America said the following about Vasquez:

"He has an advanced approach at the plate and good pitch recognition for his age. He has explosive bat speed and a compact, balanced swing… He shows advanced feel for driving pitches the other way and has power to all parts of the park."

His numbers over the course of last season in Quad Cities/West Michigan were .284/.331/.400, with 9 HR and 60 RBI. These numbers don’t sound stellar, but Danry’s only 19 years old and already playing full season ball.

He’s got a great swing and a huge arm. He makes double plays from LF to 1B look easy. I’d be on the lookout for him to start his rise through the ranks.
