The Houston Texans training camp has commenced and we were finally able to hear from a guy that’s generated some the team’s biggest story lines going into it.

The Houston Texans running back D’Onta Foreman addressed the media earlier today in regard to his charges he faces for an incident dating back to July 16.  It’s sticky legal situation for the rookie but there’s plenty of evidence that he’ll be able to get through this dilemma with minimal harm.  There will be consequences but the full extent of the law won’t be enforced on Foreman as this is his first offense that I know of.

Here’s what he told the media today via FOX 26’s Mark Berman:

It’s good to hear that this guy has learned from his mistakes as I don’t peg him as someone who would be a repeat offender.  He knows how hard he worked to get to this point of career and does not want any of it to be all for naught.  He also proclaims he’s innocent and expects for the charges to be dropped.  His lawyer, Chip Lewis, is working on it.

Here’s what he added:

To bring you up to speed just in case that you were under a rock,  Foreman was on-campus July 16 at the University of Texas, his alma-mater, hanging out with friends.  It was around midnight when the University Police received reports of marijuana smoke emitting from three vehicles in a parking lot adjacent to residence hall.  When the police checked it out, they found marijuana in each vehicle and a gun inside Foreman’s, which was registered and licensed to him.

The police arrested Foreman around 3 a.m. Sunday morning and charged him with unlawful carrying of a weapon and marijuana possession.  He did post bond later on Sunday and his maintained his innocence.  Lewis has continued to reiterate that he complied with all laws in the regard to the storage of his firearm and that the marijuana was not his but had belonged to one of his friends.

I honestly think that Foreman won’t be totally vindicated of the charges but will be punished with some type of probation — likely community service — to ensure that he learns his lesson and he’s also gets an opportunity to help out those in need locally.  It will be a head start from as it’s more of an unofficial expectation of Houston Texans players to do some type of service work.  And who knows what the NFL will do as well?  We’ll have to see.

I also touch on this in my podcast, Locked on Texans, one that I co-host with industry-vet Robert Land:

Next: Delving into the Duane Brown dilemma

Foreman rushed for 2,028 yards for the Longhorns last season and was a third-round pick (89th overall) in the 2017 NFL Draft.

Go Texans.
