The Houston Texans are beginning the season with Tom Savage behind center at the quarterback position. But they did move up in the draft to get Deshaun Watson for a reason so how long Savage will be first string remains to be seen.

The Houston Texans have not had good luck at the quarterback position…well ever really.  But our best two years were with Matt Schaub from 2011-2013.  Two seasons is really the only solid quarterback production the team has had sadly.

And since then, it’s possible the Texans have had the worst stretch of quarterbacks the franchise has ever seen in it’s short history. Which is saying something considering the quarterbacks that have been on our roster.

2013-2017 has been a struggle to say the least. From Ryan Fitzpatrick to Brian Hoyer to Ryan Mallet back to Brian Hoyer to Brock Osweiler.  The Texans front office has desperately tried everything it can to just have the quarterback position be solid enough to let the defense carry the game and all the quarterback has to do is score a touchdown here or there.

It’s yet to happen.  Turnover prone quarterbacks have been the achilles heel of this team. It’s one thing to not be able to move the ball forward and your team punts. It’s another to throw an interception on your own 25 yard line putting your defense in a position where they most likely will give up at least three points if not more.

It’s incredible to look at the fact that of the quarterbacks that have started for the Texans over the past four seasons, none of them have been able to find a landing spot in any other town with either a starting position or being in the long term plans of the franchise.

Fitzpatrick is fighting to be the second string quarterback in Tampa Bay. Mallet is the back up to Joe Flacco in Baltimore. Hoyer may end up being the starter for the 49ers but that’s still up in the air (unlike any of the balls he tries to throw more than 30 yards). And Osweiler we basically had to pay the Cleveland Browns to take on as their starting quarterback.

Whether it is Tom Savage or Deshaun Watson who turns this poor quarterback luck around doesn’t matter. It does look like Watson is the quarterback of the future and he has a higher ceiling than all the aforementioned quarterbacks, so maybe the fifth time is a charm. And if not, well here’s to another 9-7 season, second round playoff exit, and another off-season search for a quarterback.
