Texans: I’ve Had Enough…It’s Full Shakedown Time

It’s time to sober up Houston Texans fans…

What you saw yesterday wasn’t a dream, it was certainly a reality — one that involved our rears getting kicked big-time.

I had an immense amount of expectations for this game as I knew this would be the stepping-stone to get us back to some respectability if we would’ve won yesterday.

With the Texans playing their banged-up rival — the Tennessee Titans — this coming Sunday, they would’ve had the opportunity to get back to .500 and start making some headway in this division.

But with the Indianapolis Colts 27-21 loss to the New Orleans Saints yesterday, the Texans are still just one game behind the 3-4 Colts with a 2-5 record.

It certainly looks like the AFC South will be one of the weaker links and it’s very possible that the winner of the division could have a pedestrian — or even subpar — record to get themselves into the playoffs.

Enough of that talk because this team is not ready for the playoffs.

They need a complete shakedown from top to bottom.

This team had no fight in them yesterday, they were playing to lose rather than trying to make even a feeble attempt to win the football game.

Busted coverages, dropped balls, giving up 46 points and 503 yards of offense is completely unacceptable.

We’re an NFL franchise for crying out loud and that shouldn’t be happening.

The Miami Dolphins aren’t that good of a football team but with the way the Texans played them, you’d think that they’d be destined for the Super Bowl!

I’m typing this very post from my hotel room in Miami as I was attendance — and character witness — of one of the worst losses in franchise history.

Although this is an incredible, eclectic city to visit, things would’ve been a lot sweeter had we been able to get this win.

Guys, this can’t keep going on!

We can’t accept the level of mediocrity, season after season.

It seems as if the Texans’ brass is certainly okay with the direction we’re headed.

For the first time in years, I honestly don’t know what exactly the trajectory is for our path to success.

Here’s what needs to happen.

A full evaluation — I mean an all-out shakedown — of every administrative position in the organization should be in full review.

We definitely have to start with Rick Smith, who has a problem evaluating talent in the later rounds.

  • Think of all the duds that he has drafted like D.J. Swearinger, Sam Montgomery, Brennan Williams, Trevardo Williams, Steve Slaton, Amobi Okoye and I could continue to go on and on.

None of the guys I mentioned have panned out and they were all picked within the first four rounds.

Some of these guys are still playing in the league, the majority of them are not.

Usually we don’t count first-round picks because they are can’t-miss but Smith was able to do that with Okoye, who is currently not latched on to any team.

    How can we accept this?

In the jobs we do to make a living, we’re held accountable if we’re not performing at the level of expectations that our employers have embedded within us.

If we can’t cut it, then we’re out the door.

That should be the case for Smith.

But I think Smith is held to a different standard because I see him know as more of “yes man,” a virtual lapdog that just obeys any command that the McNair family doles out.

    Woof…woof.

If I’m the McNair’s, why would I fire a guy that does everything that I want them to do?

I’m raking in millions of dollars of revenue that continue to increase year-by-year so as far as business, I’m doing quite well even if the product is quite diluted.

But the Houston Chronicle’s Brian T. Smith writes that Smith has even more power as the McNair’s have moved toward a more “hands-off” approach.

Here’s my evaluation — Smith needs to be shown the door as well as defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel and special teams coach Bob Ligashesky, who are both shepherding some of the most under-performing units in franchise history.

Bill O’Brien and newly-minted offensive coordinator George Godsey should be safe for now but I’d definitely say that his seat is warm.

If he doesn’t get this together by next year, he needs to go as well.

What the Texans really need is a general manger and head coach that are in alignment with each other because although the franchise can put on an air that both O’Brien and Smith work well together, I don’t think that’s the case.

We need a general manager that is willing to stand up to upper management and say “no” emphatically if they feel that the decisions that they’re pressured to make are wrong.

And the fact that Ryan Mallett is still on this team is sickening.  Accountability is a hallmark of the Bill O’Brien era and he’s not being offered the opportunity as he was vetoed by Rick Smith.

Mallett’s bizarre, unacceptable no doubt precipitated the no heart, no hustle performance the Texans enamored this past Sunday.

He needs to be CUT right now with the losses of the guaranteed money he’ll get, there’s no making any deals, he’s damaged goods — who’d want him?

One is respected more if they stand up and believe what’s right, not what’s popular.

And until that happens, we’re going to hear the same old story every season.

We’re a freaking joke to just about everybody in the league and there’s not a team out there that takes us all that seriously.

If the McNair’s were smart, they’d just sell the team to owners who are more committed to winning and don’t just care about the dollars.

Until changes are made from the top to the bottom, us Texans’ fans will continue to wallow in this rotten cesspool of misery.

I don’t know about you but I’m up for some house cleaning.

    Who’s down?
