What Will Vincent Velasquez Mean To The Houston Astros?

This is getting good.

The Houston Astros are making additional moves to ensure that the team doesn’t lose its leadership in the AL!

According to MLB.com’s Brian McTaggart, RHP Vincent Velasquez has been promoted to the majors, skipping Triple-A:

The club had not yet confirmed the move at the time of this writing.

This move comes as exciting news for Astros’ fans as Velasquez, the No. 4 prospect on the Astros’ Top 30 prospects list, and the No. 78 MLB prospect nationally out of 100, will be finally be going to the big show.

More from House of Houston

He was tearing it up in with Double-A Corpus Christi which warranted the reasoning the for his jump.

Velasquez, 23, went 3-0 with a 1.37 ERA with 37 strikeouts and a flabbergasting 0.91 WHIP in five starts for the Hooks.

He just got through fanning nine and was flirting with a no-no up until the 7th inning against the 32-22 Northwest Arkansas Naturals in his start this past Wednesday, which will be his last with the team.

The Hooks beat the Naturals 3-2.

Some players are born ready and Velasquez definitely seems to fit that bill.

The bottom part of the starting rotation for the Astros continues to struggle and Velasquez will certainly provide a shot in the arm for our pitching.

  • He started out a bit slow with the Class-A Quad Cities River Bandits but really started to gain steam and notoriety after being to the Class-A Advanced Lancaster JetHawks and dominating after his promotion to AA this season.

Velasquez has a deadly fastball that hovers around 90 mph but can get it up to about 96.

He also has a solid change-up and a curve ball that still can be better than it already is!

I honestly think that he’s still a guy that has been flying a lot of the national radar but not anymore, especially after he makes his debut.

    When is that?

It will be this Wednesday, according to McTaggart, the last game of the series against the Chicago White Sox battling against Jose Quintana.  He will join the team today.

    What does this mean?

It definitely means Roberto Hernandez will be going to the bullpen (also reported by McTaggart) and Velasquez has essentially taken his spot.

Hernandez has been throwing some stinkers as of late which made it nearly unbearable to watch.

Did you see his start Friday against the Toronto Blue Jays?  Just plain turrrrrrrrrribull!

As a matter of fact, he has gone 2-5 with a 5.18 ERA in 11 starts so far this season.  He had 1.42 WHIP for Pete’s sake!

Sayonara!  I certainly hope the pitcher formally known as Fausto Carmona can get his groove back but in a reserve role.

But anyway, Velasquez will take the reins for the No. 4 spot for now for the potential to move up a slot depending on how he performs.

There will be some corresponding moves to create space for Velasquez and SS phenom Carlos Correa, who was just promoted to the Astros yesterday.

Will it be Marwin GonzalezJonathan Villar?  Another reliever aside from Jake Buchanan?

    More from Houston Astros

    We’ll find out soon enough.

I’m excited, you should be excited and the whole damn city of Houston should be in regard to this news!

Hell, we’re on a four-game losing streak and something had to be done quick before this slide continued.

I have no doubt that with the excitement, we’re going to take the path less traveled and continue to shock the world!

    Just wait and see…
