Colby Rasmus: HOH’s Week 7 Silver Star Award Winner

The Houston Astros proudly continue their renowned relevance in baseball circles alike.

For a team that wasn’t even in the conversation, the chatter is certainly underway about how good this team will be.

As I’ve said many times, I was wondering when this team would finally start to hit its stride with the talent it has and I believe now that the team has reached that threshold.

It’s exciting and baseball fans alike in H-Town should take notice of how these guys are winning.

They’re making plays — just plain and simple.

Each game, somebody steps up — and it’s not always Jose Altuve — to help the team continue their exponential success as of late.

Altuve had a heavy burden on his shoulders that he carried quite well over the years he has been here but now he has help and that’s the most important thing in regard to this team keeping on winning.

I almost felt as if he were asked to do too much but now he can focuses on the things that he does well and still remain the cornerstone of the franchise.

What’s quite peculiar is that the Astros are last in the majors is batting average (.228) but lead in home runs (62).

These guys dig the long ball and they’re not afraid to show it either.

  • There’s even signs of life coming out of Chris Carter who has vastly underperformed at the plate during the season so far.

But he had two home runs coupled with seven RBIs last week demonstrating that he’s about ready to become the player we normally see in the 2nd half of the season.

He still has a ways to go but at least he fields quite solidly at first base for us at the moment.

Although the Astros have gone 4-3 in the last seven days, there were within striking distance in all three of those losses and were just the unfortunate recipients of falling just short getting over the hump.

    More from House of Houston

There was one guy that continued to show up for work and do what he does best, make plays and get on-base.

Because of this, excellence deserves to be recognized — today on that type of basis continuously, we will honor an individual player that made the most impact in helping the team, despite whether it resulted in a win or a loss.

We’ve dubbed it House of Houston Silver Star Award

And this week’s Silver Star Award goes to…

    Colby Rasmus!

For the past week, Rasmus may have been a little late but always seemed to provide timely hits to push his team over the proverbial hurdle.

Look no further than this past Tuesday’s match up against the Oakland A’s when the Astros were up 3-2 but his two-run homer at the bottom of 8th effectively put the Astros in position to eventually win that game 6-4.

    More from Houston Astros

Also in Sunday’s win over the Toronto Blue Jays, his former team, he was pivotal in homering to right eventually setting up the Astros to beat them 4-2 as well.

Although I sometimes have my qualms about his fielding, the guy can rake and get on-base and that’s why he’s on this team!

He’s currently tied for 2nd — with Evan Gattis — on this team with eight home runs on the season so that’s your evidence right there.  Luis Valbuena leads the team with 11 HRs.

For the week, Rasmus has batted .304, with seven hits, four doubles, four ribbies, two homers, five strikeouts, one walk through seven games and 23 at-bats.

His OPS was a stellar 1.059.

So just keep doing what you’re doing Colby, I’m proud and I know you’re going to do your part in making the 2015 season a memorable one!

    Go ‘Stros!
