Report: Houston Texans Are In Hot Pursuit Of…Brian Hoyer?!?

The question that has been on the forefront of Houston Texans’ minds may be answered sooner than we think.

The question you may ask?

Just who will be starting under center for the Texans next season?

We all have an idea of who we want in that position but things may not pan out necessarily to what we’d actually get.

I think that the news that’s developing right now is toward the latter.

NFL Network’s Jeff Darlington reported that the Texans are seriously targeting quarterback Brian Hoyer:

I had a feeling this would happen, it’s a natural fit for Hoyer who was coached by Bill O’Brien for three seasons with the New England Patriots (2009-2011) while he was the primary backup Tom Brady.

SportsTalk 790’s Jayson Braddock provided his thoughts in regard to the reasoning of the interest in his services:

Whether he’s a natural fit for the Texans will remain to be seen.

I honestly feel that Ryan Mallett should be given a shot at the starting gig — I don’t hear teams knocking down his door requesting his services so if Hoyer were to come to H-Town, they both need to battle it out for the starting job.

As you know, Mallett and Hoyer both have a history — they worked together as backups during the 2011 season, Mallett’s rookie season and Hoyer’s last with the Pats.

But quite honestly, I’m trying to find some excitement inside of me in regard to his possible arrival but it’s certainly hard to come by.

It’s clear that all O’Brien wants a QB that can manage the game, run his playbook efficiently and try not to turn the ball over.

No bells or whistles here.

Hoyer fits those characteristics but his interception percentage index is a 95, a bit below average. He throws picks and we all know it.

But you never know, he may turn out to be exactly what the doctor — or O’Brien in the case — ordered.

More from Houston Texans

Hoyer, 29, passed for 3,226 yards last season throwing 12 touchdowns to 13 picks. He finished with a 55.3 completion percentage and 76.5 quarterback rating in 14 games — 13 starts — for the Cleveland Browns in 2014.

He was ranked first the league in yards per pass completion at 13.7 and 4th in game-winning drives with four.

Hmmm — maybe O’Brien is basing his decision off those interesting stats. I can’t remember the last time we’ve had game-winning drive.

We’ll have to see, just don’t expect me to run out and get his jersey any time soon. Just hope he doesn’t wear No. 8 any time soon, nothing can come good out of that.
