Xavier Hutchinson Officially on Breakout Watch as Texans' WR Injuries Pile Up

Christian Kirk and Braxton Berrios missing Texans practice could give Xavier Hutchinson a huge opportunity against the Rams in Week 1.

The Houston Texans were already starting the 2025 season with concerns at the receiver position. Late last year, Tank Dell suffered a knee injury that has his status moving forward very much up for debate. Houston looked to make up for his expected absence by bringing in a handful of veteran options, with Christian Kirk being the most notable addition. Nico Collins allows you a certain level of patience, understanding that you already have a number one option.

However, there is no denying that the Texans could've done a better job at finding proven depth behind Collins. This has only been furthered by the report that Kirk and Braxton Berrios weren't spotted at practice by the Houston Chronicle's Jonathan Alexander. This concern creates a huge opportunity for Xavier Hutchinson, though.

Xavier Hutchinson Poised to Benefit From Christian Kirk Injury News

Houston needs its full group of weapons in what is an underrated matchup against the Los Angeles Rams. A great defense and a treasure trove of weapons are going to prove to be an early test for C.J. Stroud and an offense that has its fair share of question marks. It is also going to serve as an opportunity for an unexpected contributor if this injury report is indicative of where things are heading.

Hutchinson was a 6th-round pick ahead of the 2023 season and has spent the last two years attempting to work his way up the depth chart. Injuries and improving performance have now opened the door to a possible start for the third-year pass catcher. At the very least, Hutchinson appears to be the primary option behind Houston's starting lineup.

For a pass catcher who is yet to surpass 300 total yards in his career, this is an incredible opportunity. One that he cannot afford to fumble if he plans to stick around Houston much longer. Hutchinson needs to make a Week 1 impact and make it clear he can deal with a heavier workload. The biggest hurdle is going to be earning the confidence of Stroud, who is dealing with a myriad of new pieces.

This is far from ideal when you're set to kick off your season against one of the most talented young fronts in the league. The margin for error is incredibly thin, and Hutchinson stepping into a productive role would be a welcome development for the Texans' coaching staff. It appears the young receiver is at least going to get his chance at a bigger role.

Looking at the current options on the depth chart if both Kirk and Berrios are unable to go against the Rams it seems Hutchinson will shift into the starting lineup. For Houston, you simply have to hope the moment isn't too big and you can find a surprise contributor in what is a far from ideal situation heading into the season.
