The Houston Texans could have a different wide receiver unit next season. Veteran wideouts Stefon Diggs and Robert Woods will become unrestricted free agents next month when the new league year begins.
Between the two receivers, the Texans would love to bring back Diggs, who had gotten off to a good start before suffering a season-ending knee injury (torn ACL) in Week 8. That said, Woods would love to return to Houston for another season but understands how free agency works.
"I had a great time here in Houston, loved being with C.J. (Stroud), a great quarterback, loved our receiver room, our coaches. We’ll see how it goes in free agency. You know how free agency is. Whatever is best for me and my family and my football career. If that’s in Houston, however it goes, we’ll look to that."
Woods joined the Texans on a two-year, $15.25 million deal in Mar. 2013 after getting released by the Tennessee Titans. The veteran wide receiver played an integral role in Houston’s offense in 2023.
Woods recorded 40 receptions (75 targets) for 426 yards and a touchdown in 14 games (11 starts). He was a solid WR3 alongside Nico Collins and Tank Dell. However, the 32-year-old Woods saw his production dip noticeably in 2024 as the Texans added Diggs.
In 15 games, the veteran wideout posted career lows across the board with 20 receptions (30 targets) for 203 yards. He also only started in four games. The last time Woods had 10 or fewer starts was in 2021 with the Los Angeles Rams (9) and 2015 with the Buffalo Bills (9).
Even though Woods would love to return to Houston to play with Stroud, the Texans need to add more youth and explosive players to the WR unit. Houston can check both boxes in free agency and the NFL draft. Once the Texans do that, they could consider bringing back Woods on a one-year deal.
