The Detroit Lions received shocking news on Monday that will impact the 2025 season, as All-Pro and Pro Bowl center Frank Ragnow announced his retirement from the game of football.
That is a huge loss for the Lions, as Ragnow established himself as one of the better centers in the NFL. The Lions will try to lean on in-house options to replace the Pro Bowler. However, you might be asking yourself how does Ragnow’s retirement affects the Houston Texans, who play in an entirely different conference.
Well, if Texans fans remember, Houston claimed veteran center Jake Andrews off waivers from the New England Patriots at the end of April. The waiver claim went under the radar as it was days after the 2025 NFL Draft.
That said, it appears that the Lions were also rumored to be interested in potentially claiming Andrews. According to Twitter/X user (@PatTalksTexans), Texans general manager Nick Caserio heard some chatter about the Lions center retiring and Detroit’s interest in Andrews and decided to swoop in.
Granted, while this rationale does make some sense on paper. We also have to take it with a grain of salt as it’s not coming from a Texans insider, analyst, or beat reporter.
As we mentioned earlier, the Lions were prepared for the possibility of Ragnow retiring as they drafted Tate Ratledge in the second round of the 2025 NFL Draft and have veteran Graham Glasgow, who signed a three-year, $20 million contract extension in 2024.
Meanwhile, the Texans hope Andrews can provide some competition for Patterson in training camp and the preseason after missing the entire 2024 season due to a torn meniscus that he sustained last summer. Andrews hasn’t played often in his NFL career, appearing in two games as a rookie, with 71 total offensive snaps at left guard.
