Like many teams around the league, the Houston Texans are currently focused on free agency, but GM Nick Caserio doesn't have a ton of financial flexibility to be aggressive there. The Texans don't have significant cap space and will try to create more but the more important aspect of their improvement for next season has to come through the draft.
Houston's prospects through the draft aren't too promising, either. The Texans only have six draft picks, one of the fewest in the league, and select at the end of each round. The first pick they have is the 25th overall selection. Yet, according to the latest report by Jonathan Alexander of the Houston Chronicle, there may be some moves involving that pick. When asked about trading the No. 25 pick, Caserio didn't rule anything out.
"We’re open-minded, we’re adaptable, we’re flexible. You’ve got to be ready to pivot. Always have to be ready to pick. We’re going to be ready to pick at 25, until we’re not ready to pick at 25."Texans GM Nick Caserio
In his piece, Alexander specifically identified Alabama guard Tyler Booker as someone the Texans could look to trade up for. If he were to fall out of the top 15, Booker could apparently be someone Houston would consider moving up for.
Trading down and potentially out of the first round shouldn't be ruled out, either. The Texans need contributors on team-friendly deals. By moving down, the Texans could get additional draft picks and take more chances on talented prospects.
Caserio is certainly not opposed to draft-day trades. He has a history of targeting a player and being aggressive to get him. Whether that prospect exists in this draft remains to be seen, but the Texans will not leave any stones unturned.
