There is no denying that the 2024 Houston Texans season was defined by inconsistency. While the franchise has an amazing core of exciting young pieces, the expected growth simply wasn't there across the board. Still, there is reason for a healthy level of belief that C.J. Stroud and a talented young defense will make the Texans a force in the AFC for years to come.
Part of discovering this potential is leaning on the past of the franchise to help enforce winning habits. While the Texans are still in search of their first Super Bowl in franchise history, there is a long list of accomplished players. Including respected pass catchers Owen Daniels and Andre Johnson, who were brought in to help during an early OTAs practice.
Texans Are Leaning on the Past to Help Set the Tone for the 2025 Season

Johnson is the most established name Houston fans will recognize, with the receiver being one of the few true bright spots in franchise history. The receiver has the most career yards and receptions in the history of the franchise. If there is anyone Stroud and the Texans' young receivers can learn from, it is the respected franchise legend.
The former Texan has a place in the NFL record books as well, ranking 11th in all-time receiving yardage. Johnson's place in league history and the respect he demands for these accomplishments are well-established.
Owen Daniels, Chester Pitts, and J.J. Moses joined the Houston legend in what had to be a fascinating practice from any perspective. It was a savvy move from the Texans' coaching staff. One that points to an understanding that this team is lacking the edge and maturity needed to make a deep run within a loaded AFC.
While the Texans have the needed talent, understanding the moment and how to prepare is vital in deciding where the 2025 season leads. It wouldn't be a surprise to see the Texans continue this strategy throughout the summer to help further a young roster. One prominent name the team could look to is current media personality and Houston legend J.J. Watt. Bringing in one of the best defenders in the history of the league would be an unquestionable boost.
Regardless, the Texans made the right call turning to the past to help inform the future and hopefully be a part of a season that will be a meaningful step forward for the organization.
