Last month, the Houston Texans made one of the more surprising coaching moves, parting ways with offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik. Slowik was in his second year as the Texans OC after spending the previous five years with the San Francisco 49ers in various roles.

After his first year in Houston with C.J. Slowik was considered one of the up-and-coming head coaching candidates.

However, that wasn’t the same sentiment this season as Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans felt the team needed a new voice on offense. Houston did its due diligence in its OC search, vetting multiple candidates, including QBs coach Jerrod Johnson.

Johnson has spent five seasons coaching in the NFL, including two with the Texans. The former NFL QB was considered one the top candidates for the vacancy. The 36-year-old position coach also interviewed for the Las Vegas Raiders’ OC vacancy, but the Raiders hired Chip Kelly.

He also interviewed for the New York Jets’ OC opening, but new Jets head coach Aaron Glenn went with Tanner Engstrand, whom he worked with in Detroit.

Meanwhile, the Texans finally filled their OC vacancy, but did not go with Johnson. Instead, they hired Los Angeles Rams pass game coordinator Nick Caley. With Houston going outside of the organization for its coordinator choice, some fans wondered what that meant for Johnson.

According to Aaron Wilson of KPRC-2, Johnson is expected to be back with the Texans next season. If you are a Texans fan this is tremendous news as Johnson has played a role in the development of Stroud.

Even though Houston is adding a new voice into the offensive room with Caley, whatever Johnson says to his group (QBs) will still hold weight. The 36-year-old might’ve missed out on an offensive coordinator role this offseason.

However, if Stroud and the Texans’ offense can bounce back in 2025, Johnson’s name should resurface next season for an OC role.
