It has been a busy offseason for the Houston Rockets. Not only did they swing big and trade for Kevin Durant, but they also managed to re-sign key players like Steven Adams and Fred VanVleet to new multi-year deals. Plus, it was reported on Friday that they are bringing back Jeff Green, Aaron Holiday, and Jae'Sean Tate, suggesting that they will be keeping most of their core intact for another season.
Using their No. 10 pick for Durant meant that the Rockets didn't have a selection in this year's draft. Considering that the Rockets don't necessarily need another rookie, this isn't a problem.
What could be a problem, however, is the fact that they may need to part ways with a young asset now that they are on an accelerated timeline for championship contention.
All Signs Point to the Rockets Trading Cam Whitmore Soon
This doesn't bode well for Cam Whitmore. It has already been reported that teams are reaching out to Houston to trade for Whitmore. The talented former Villanova star saw action in limited minutes in his first two seasons in the NBA, and it would be understandable if he wanted out to revive his career.
Whitmore has shown flashes when he has been on the court, but hasn't received consistent playing time to really make a determination about his role and future in the NBA. With the Rockets starting the 2025-26 as one of the title favorites, it's hard to imagine Whitmore stepping into a larger role and being a difference maker.
Another season riding the bench would only help to tank Whitmore's trade value. Instead, since the 20-year-old small forward has suitors this offseason, recouping some value in a trade for him could make some sense. If the Rockets could turn Whitmore into a veteran who can shoot and defend, they shouldn't waste any more time before doing so.
