The NBA offseason is flying by as August is around the corner. The Houston Rockets have been one of the more active teams since the 2024-25 season ended, making moves that range from adding the likes of Kevin Durant and Dorian Finney-Smith to re-signing Steven Adams while reuniting with Clint Capela.
In other words, the Rockets look poised to replicate the success they saw with last season's 52-win performance.
Even though Houston's roster is mostly set, there's still plenty of time to shake things up if head coach Ime Udoka and general manager Rafael Stone aren't content with the status quo. With that in mind, the Rockets added another new face to their roster over the weekend.
Rockets Sign NBA G League MVP JD Davison After Celtics Release
NBA insider Chris Haynes is reporting that the Rockets have signed free-agent guard JD Davison, according to the 22-year-old's agent. Davison was released by the Boston Celtics earlier this weekend, and it didn't take long for Houston to pull the trigger on a signing once he hit the open market.

A standout player during his time with the Alabama Crimson Tide, Davison has been with the Celtics since he was drafted 53rd overall in 2022. Although he barely saw much NBA action during that stint, his G League performances put him on a lot of teams' radars — especially after his last season
Davison took home 2024-25 NBA G League MVP honors thanks to a career performance with the Celtics' affiliate in Maine. The Montgomery, AL native averaged 25.1 points on .483/.336/.742 splits while also putting up 7.6 assists, 5.3 rebounds, and 1.5 steals per game. Even though that showing was fantastic, Boston's loaded roster made it impossible for Davison to move up the pecking order, leading to his release.
Whether or not he has better luck in Houston remains to be seen, but one can argue that the door is open for Davison to fight his way into Udoka's lineup. The Rockets averaged the second-fewest assists per game in the league last season, so it isn't unfathomable to imagine Davison playing a bench role if he can prove that he has what it takes to be a facilitator before the summer is over.
For now, Davison will begin his Rockets tenure on a two-way contract, leaving time to tell if he can convince the team to convert it into a standard deal before the 2025-26 regular season begins.
