The offseason craze is over in the NBA, and teams have largely finalized their rosters for the next season. This includes the Houston Rockets, who have arguably upgraded their personnel more than any other team in the league. Yet, one more roster spot remains open in Houston, and they would be wise to fill it with a perimeter player who can create and make shots.

Fortunately for them, such a player exists among the unsigned free agents. Amir Coffey, who spent six seasons with the Los Angeles Clippers, remains a free agent and would be an excellent fit in Houston for that final roster spot.

Amir Coffey Is the Perfect Rockets Fit Among Remaining Free Agents

Despite significant additions to the roster, the Rockets are still not the most dynamic offensive team. They will be a defense-first team that may struggle at times in the half-court offense. There is a level of concern about the team's lack of shooting and perimeter creation, even though Kevin Durant will surely help.

Getting a player like Coffey in the building should alleviate some of those concerns. The 28-year-old can has good positional size at six-foot-seven and can guard both shooting guards and small forwards. He hit over 40% of his threes last season on 3.4 attempts per game. This has increased his career average to 38.4% from downtown, making him an easy off-ball fit in Houston.

The 2024-25 season was Coffey's most efficient season with 61.4% True Shooting. His usage rate continued to be low on the loaded Clippers team with James Harden, Norman Powell, and Kawhi Leonard, but he was an important contributor, playing 24.3 minutes per game, and even starting 13 games in the regular season. His ability to fit next to stars without taking anything off the table, thanks to his efficiency and shooting, makes Coffey an intriguing fit for the Rockets.

The Rockets are deep and talented across all positions. They don't necessarily need to add to their current roster. However, a team with championship aspirations has to find as much value on the margins as possible. Signing an underrated rotation player like Coffey at this stage of the offseason would certainly be a value add.
