Steven Adams created some headlines after posting what seemed to be a farewell post to the city of Houston on his Instagram. 6 months ago, this would have been a non-story, but Adams just demonstrated his value across a 7-game playoff series against the Golden State Warriors.

Steven Adams Teases Rockets Exit With Social Media Post

Adams had a dramatic impact on winning in that series, as the Rockets had a -8.8 net rating with Adams off the floor, versus a +14.5 net rating with Adams on the floor, a dramatic +23.3 swing. The veteran big man was particularly impactful on the offensive glass as the Rockets' offensive rebound rate leaped up to 42.1% with him in the game, compared to just 27.5% with him out.

His on-court play was a huge reason the Rockets were able to even up the series at 3-3, and he was arguably the most talked-about Rocket in the media towards the end of the series. His paint dominance has certainly caused teams to take notice, but another factor in their interest is certainly his stellar record as a teammate in the locker room.

Adams is an unrestricted free agent this offseason, so keeping him on the Rockets may be tough. Opposing teams are certain to throw some big money at Adams. Houston may not have the cap space to keep him if they exercise Fred Van Vleet's team option, which is not an easy choice at a price tag of $44.9 million.

Houston may also prioritize pursuing other free agents or a superstar trade, in which case, paying Adams real money is likely not an option.

Rockets fans are justified in their concern with losing Adams, but ultimately, this team needs to be thinking bigger than paying money for a backup big, especially with Alperen Sengun at the center spot. The clear need this offseason is better guard play and better 3PT shooting. Houston was 24th in offensive Effective Field Goal% (52.6%) and 20th in 3PT% (36.0%). They were just 22nd in half-court offense.

Adding offensive talent on the perimeter is the clear priority this offseason. If they can keep Adams on a team-friendly deal, that would be great, but ultimately, Rafael Stone needs to figure out how to put spacing around Amen Thompson and Alperen Sengun. The Rockets have a great foundation with their defense, but if they want to take the next step into contention, they must improve their half-court offensive efficiency.
