The Houston Rockets have been the story of the Western Conference, landing former Phoenix Sun and NBA Champion Kevin Durant. After making a surprise run last season, the franchise wasn't willing to remain patient with its core. But even after the Durant trade, the franchise has every reason to remain active. One potential path is stealing another veteran, this time from free agency.
Chris Paul is obviously a familiar name to Rockets fans, and a reunion could make a lot of sense.
Rockets Can Cap Off Free Agency With Chris Paul Reunion
Paul spent last season with a young San Antonio Spurs team and still flashed an ability to control an offense in short bursts. He's obviously not the elite force he once was, but there is still incredible value in having him on any roster. Paul's experience and leadership would be a great addition to a still-young Rockets team looking to make a push in a loaded Western Conference. To beat the top teams you're going to need depth and surprise contributors along the way.
Paul is yet to sign and has to at least be considering retirement at this stage of his career. Despite still making an impact, there are clear signs of aging over the last two seasons. Paul could opt to walk away while he is still playing at a high level. Regardless, the Rockets should make the call, hoping to add depth to the bench and a great veteran presence.
While Paul isn't an elite defender, the Rockets have the needed bodies to cover for any issues Paul faces. The team's core is built around long, rangy defenders who can easily switch. This furthers the idea that adding the guard to the roster is the right decision.
Signing the veteran continues a strong offseason and adds yet another piece that forces the league to pay attention. While the Rockets have one of the most exciting cores in the league, the attention remains on aging stars. It's LeBron, Durant, and Curry that continue to demand attention and the spotlight even in the twilight of their respective careers.
While Paul might not be at this level, the star is a tier below as a household name after years of accomplishments. Bringing in the veteran alongside Durant makes far too much sense not to explore in the next weeks of the offseason.
