The Houston Texans are coming off a disappointing 2024 season. Although they won the AFC South for the second straight year, their offense took a slight step back. Though much of the blame for the fall off was placed on the offensive line and deservedly so, the wide receiver room also struggled.
Houston's top three receivers, Nico Collins, Stefon Diggs and Tank Dell, ended up playing just four games together because of injuries.
With Diggs now in New England and Dell out due to injury, Houston will need their new additions to step up to begin 2025. This offseason, the Texans drafted Iowa State receivers Jayden Higgins and Jaylin Noel and signed veteran Christian Kirk. While these three should fill in nicely for Dell, one of Kirk's former teammates recently became available.
According to Aaron Wilson, the Jacksonville Jaguars released Gabe Davis on Wednesday morning. On the surface, adding Davis seems unnecessary because it could take snaps away from the rookies, but it could also have benefits.
#Jaguars to release wide receiver Gabe Davis, who had 20 catches for 239 yards and two touchdowns last season

Should Houston Sign Gabe Davis?
Adding Davis to the roster would bring two major benefits. For starters, it would bring a little more competition to the room. While a very fair argument can be made that's what the rookies are for, there's no guarantee how they will perform in their first year. Davis is at least a proven commodity.
In five seasons, the 26-year-old has only recorded fewer than 500 receiving yards once. That occurred last season when Davis played in ten games, racking up 20 receptions on 42 targets for 239 yards and two touchdowns. Despite not having a great year last year, Davis is still in the prime of his career and is capable of returning to form.
Furthermore, like the rookies, Davis and Kirk have chemistry after being teammates last year. Even though they didn't have great production when on the field together in Jacksonville, they still understand how each other plays the game. That understanding could help the Texans' offense return to its 2023 form.
Be that as it may, Davis landing in Houston does seem unlikely given the already crowded room. Still, if he did find his way to the team, it would make for an interesting wide receiver room in 2025.
