It is obvious that the Houston Texans' offseason focus has been on adding further defensive intensity and key veterans to help a young roster take a step forward. After being a trendy pick ahead of the 2024 season, the Texans seem to be an afterthought in the AFC picture.
This is somewhat fair when you consider Houston's 2024 season and the lack of expected progression. Still, the team has made the needed offseason moves to take a step forward, including bringing in a new back to help take some pressure off C.J. Stroud and Joe Mixon. Veteran back Nick Chubb signed with the Texans on what has the potential to be a bargain deal.
Already, the back is having an impressive offseason, reporting that he is back to the same speed numbers prior to the injury that derailed his 2023 and 2024 seasons. This makes sense when you consider the fact that injuries of this level often take more than a year to make a full recovery from. All of this adds up to Houston fans having every reason for excitement.
New Texans' Addition Nick Chubb Already Impressing
If Chubb is able to return to form, the Texans are going to have an argument for the best backfield duo in the league. This is the exact type of move the team needed to make to help take pressure off Stroud and allow the quarterback to take a step back. While the offense is still going to be driven by the star, the Texans have a chance for even more balance.
Chubb's punishing run style is perfect in short-yardage situations or to save Mixon's legs for when the games matter most. If the report is true and Chubb is truly back to the best version of himself, the Houston offense has a chance to be one of the best units in the league.
No question, Houston made a great decision bringing in the veteran and has given themselves a chance to take a big step forward. Add in another year for an impressive young defense to mature, and now is the time to get back on board, believing the Texans can be a real AFC contender.
