The Houston Texans have embraced change across the board during the 2025 offseason. Not only did Houston shake up its coaching staff by replacing coordinator Bobby Slowik, but the Texans have executed several trades and let other veteran players leave as free agents in favor of fresh faces.
Such was the case with long-snapper Jon Weeks, who's headed to the San Francisco 49ers after a whopping 15 years in Houston's organization. Even though he's only a specialist, the stability he brought on game days was incredibly valued by fans, and they're not thrilled a vital member of the team was allowed to just walk in free agency.
While Texans followers debate the reasons behind Weeks' departure, franchise legend J.J. Watt has spoken out on the unexpected departure.
J.J. Watt Tips His Cap to Jon Weeks on Texans Tenure
In an Instagram post, Watt commended Weeks for being a "pillar of consistency, determination and excellence at his craft." He also tipped his cap to the veteran long-snapper, saying, "Hell of a run in H-Town. Hell of a run."
It's clear from Watt's comments that he's a big fan of Weeks, and that's not a surprise at all. Their two careers were almost parallel, as the former spent 2011-2020 with the Texans, while the latter entered the NFL a year earlier in 2010 and was there every year of Watt's Houston tenure. That gave them plenty of time to develop a connection despite not playing regularly on the field together or with the same units.
Watt will forever be remembered by NFL fans as one of the leading faces of the Texans, but those in Houston know how important someone like Weeks has been to this franchise's growth. The amount of regime changes he's experienced gave him incredible institutional knowledge to pass down to the next generation of Texans leaders as they came through those doors.
Unfortunately, 15 years of Texans football memories have been partially lost with Weeks' exit. Hopefully the team is able to bring him back in at least some way down the line, though, to ensure his legacy lives on in the halls of NRG Stadium.
