Several NFL teams began OTAs this week, which is the next step in the offseason phase as the 2025 NFL regular season approaches.

The Houston Texans weren’t one of those teams, as their voluntary offseason training activities start next week. This is a good opportunity for head coach DeMeco Ryans and the rest of the coaching staff to see the vets and the incoming rookie class all in one setting.

However, a few notable veterans will not be at OTAs, as they were either let go by the Texans earlier this offseason or not re-signed. Veteran offensive guard Shaq Mason falls into the first category.

In the days leading up to the start of the new league year, the Texans cut the 31-year-old right guard after two seasons with the club. Houston struggled mightily last season and played a part in the offensive line’s overall struggles.

According to Pro Football Focus, Mason had an overall 62.3 grade (65th among 135 eligible guards), a 65.2 pass blocking grade (52nd), and a 57.7 run blocking grade (93rd). He also allowed eight sacks and 34 pressures, which is unacceptable, whether you are a veteran or a rookie.

Mason’s performance didn’t improve in the playoffs as he was brutal against the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC Divisional Round. The veteran offensive lineman didn’t allow a sack, which is shocking, given that Stroud was sacked eight times in the playoff loss.

However, Mason had a 47.2 pass blocking grade and a 53.3 run blocking grade in 68 offensive snaps.

Based on his performance last season, it's not surprising that he still hasn’t signed with a new team with OTAs underway. Most teams would rather take a chance on a younger option on the offensive line to see if they can develop them.

At this stage of Mason’s career, there’s no more room for development. That said, all is not lost for the former Texan.

As we get closer to training camp in July and preseason games, he might be able to snag an opportunity, especially if a contending team suffers an injury on the offensive line. Mason has shown throughout his 10-year career that he can be a capable starter in the league, whether in Atlanta, Tampa Bay, or Houston.
